Friday Network back in business!

The Friday Network group are meeting again for the first time in over a year. Everyone enjoyed seeing their friends and exploring the temporary venue at The Orchard. The group will be planning their programme over the coming weeks and hope to be back in their usual venue at the United Reformed Church as soon as it reopens to public groups.

Saturday group meets at a new venue

The Saturday group enjoyed meeting at the Orchard Community Cafe for the first time and even had table service by Hannah and Vicky! The group talked about what they were able to do at the moment and what they were looking forward to doing once lockdown eases. They also planned the group sessions for the next few months, look out for the dates on our Facebook page!

Speakeasy on the move to The Orchard

Our lease at 17 New Road ends this month so from 8th December we will be based at the Basingstoke Voluntary Action offices at the The Orchard. We will continue to support our self advocacy groups to meet in the local community, and the staff team will carry on working with people in their homes or remotely on the telephone and video calls. We look forward to getting to know our new neighbours in the other local charities that also have a home at The Orchard!

Celebrating Advocacy Awareness and Trustees week

We celebrated Advocacy Awareness week by attending the national advocacy conference last week online, and tweeting @Speakeasy2017 about the difference advocacy is making to people we work with. Our Speakeasy Trustees met on Zoom last Wednesday (see picture) so started celebrating early for Trustees Week which has been all this week. We are looking for new Trustees, so have a look at our Volunteers page or call us on 07824 696444 for more information!

Basingstoke self advocates meet up again

Another successful indoor socially distanced meeting on Saturday 3rd October helped people share experiences and meet up with their friends. Not everyone can join in online activities or plan social outings so people enjoyed coming to the group.  People talked about things they are finding hard and what is helping them – having something to look forward to and making regular contact with friends were the ‘top tips’. Lee and Nick had already planned to go to the pub afterwards, and Amy and Sam though it sounded like fun so went with them as well!

Our first indoors group since lockdown!

Saturday 5th September saw our first indoors self advocacy group since lockdown. We met at the Roger Morris Centre for a couple of hours of socially distanced chat and video interviews on life in lockdown. For Joanne and Alex it was their first time going out since March – both were nervous but enjoyed seeing their friends again

Socially distanced coffee morning a success!

Saturday 1st August was our first socially distanced Coffee morning. People enjoyed meeting up with their friends and hearing about each others’s news, as well as watching the Bootcamp classes and disability football team practice in the park! Everyone had to bring their own drinks and something to sit on ( although we did provide some spare blankets and chairs). We plan on holding another one at the beginning of September.
